Thomas is an E2 Class 0-6-0T tank engine who works on the North Western Railway. Built in 1920 for the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway at Brighton Works in England, he moved to the Island of Sodor as a station pilot in 1924, and replaced Glynn as its No. 1 engine. After saving James from a derailment in 1925, he was given charge of the newly extended Ffarquhar Branch Line, which he still works with his coaches, Annie and Clarabel. Since 1945, Thomas has become one of the most famous locomotives and beloved children's characters in the world, due to his inclusion in The Railway Series of books, and its television adaption.

Livery

Thomas is painted in the NWR's passenger blue livery, with red lining and yellow window surrounds. The number "1" is painted on the sides of his tanks in yellow

When Thomas first arrived on Sodor, he was painted teal-green with white and yellow lining. He had "LBSC" lettering painted on his tanks and had the number "70" painted on the sides of his bunker, both in yellow.
